Monash Brewlab Newsletter Vol. 2

Updated: Apr 8, 2020

A WRAP UP OF OUR LAST 2 WEEKS The past two weeks have involved important milestones for the Monash BrewLab team.  Two groups presented their BrewLab related final year research projects to the engineering faculty, but their time with the team is not over yet! Eddie, Dennis and Alistair focused on the start-up and technicalities of nano-scale brewing, while Seb and Ollie dived into improving the sustainability of the operation. An exciting outcome was the invention of 'Brewkies' made of the spent malted barley. The team is passionate about reducing waste and exploring new ways to improve sustainability.

Most recently the team completed the first all-hands brew! The result will be a Monash BrewLab Pale Ale named "Calibration". In the words of managing director Dan, this beer allows us to "calibrate the equipment, our skills, and ourselves as a team". An update on the taste can be expected in a few weeks!

Meet...Ollie Syniagovska!

We caught up with Ollie and asked her a couple of questions so that YOU can get to know her better!

Role: Legal Officer

Studies: Chemical Engineering and Commerce

What excites you about being part of the Monash BrewLab team? "For me BrewLab stands mostly for two things: first, it is an opportunity to solve a very real engineering problem that requires continuous improvement. And second, it is a small business with all of the beauties and issues of a small business. It has been immensely fascinating for me to compare my previous working and academic experience to what's happening in BrewLab, and try to learn and grow as a professional. On top of that, BrewLab is an empowering opportunity because I can clearly see the line of effect of each of my actions. And finally, I am eternally grateful to BrewLab for connecting me to so many inspiring, bright and enthusiastic people. It's amazing to be part of the team I truly believe in."

Outside of studies and Monash BrewLab team, how do you spend your time? "Besides the usual interest in cinematography, I delved into technical scuba diving, developing film photos, cosplay crafting and embroidery. I am no expert in any of those fields, except for scuba diving, probably, I have been doing it for 13 years now ! And, yes, as apparent from my spent grains crackers, I like cooking. I am not particularly good at it, but it never stopped me."
